Savannah Pioneer Cemetery

We should work together to agree on the name for our dear cemetery. Is there an official name that we must use?

I prefer Savannah Pioneer Cemetery, as it carries the cachet of the word Pioneer. My goal right now is to obtain protection of the place, such as by getting it listed as a California Historical Landmark, and getting it listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Can we use that name?

I agree with you on that, Eric. I was thinking of that very thing when I named the blog. Although the sign says Savannah Memorial Park, A Pioneer Cemetery, it seems more appropriate (and more in keeping with our goal) to stress the Pioneer.

Names of cemeteries in California have always seemed to change throughout the years. In the past it has been my practice to trace the use of the cemetery back to the earliest community. Hence, it was early on referred to as both the El Monte and Savannah cemetery for the two adjacent communities. Since the cemetery is actually located on the John Guess property which was located at Savannah, I suggest that is the name that should be kept. I see no reason not to use SAVANNAH PIONEER CEMETERY. It certainly has its share of pioneers...

I think that the name Savannah Pioneer Cemetery is perfect. It lets the public know that they have some pretty interesting history in their community.Hopefully they take notice and step up to the plate on helping save and restore a great part of the history in our city.
